Eduardo Vega, a 58-year-old resident of Islip Terrace, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of his son-in-law, Roshane McLaren. The incident occurred at their shared home in Islip Terrace. Vega pleaded guilty to Manslaughter in the First Degree last month.

"There is absolutely no justification for this defendant’s violent actions," stated Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. "The brutal manner in which he chose to attack and kill Mr. McLaren deserves an equally serious prison sentence."

According to the investigation and court proceedings, the altercation began on September 27, 2022, when Vega engaged in a verbal dispute with one of his co-resident sons-in-law. This escalated as Vega threw a lawn chair and threatened violence with a baseball bat. He also punched one of his daughters during the confrontation before leaving the scene on foot.

Upon learning that Vega had struck his wife during the altercation, McLaren confronted him upon his return to their home with Tanya Denis, Vega's wife and co-defendant. In response, Vega stabbed McLaren twice in the chest and fled from the scene. Denis subsequently helped him by providing money and driving him to Brentwood train station where he escaped to Brooklyn.

McLaren was taken to South Shore University Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Vega surrendered himself at Suffolk County Police Department’s Third Precinct on October 2, 2022. He admitted guilt on September 13, 2024, before Acting County Court Judge Richard T. Dunne who later imposed a sentence of 25 years imprisonment plus five years post-release supervision. Christopher Gioe represented him legally.

Tanya Denis also pleaded guilty earlier this year on September 4th for Hindering Prosecution in the Third Degree and received legal representation from Ian Fitzgerald.
