Connecticut charter captain convicted for illegal fishing in New York waters

Raymond A. Tierney District Attorney | Suffolk County District Attorney's Office

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced the conviction of Michael Tenedine, a 58-year-old from East Haven, Connecticut. Tenedine was found guilty of operating a charter vessel without a permit and illegal possession of black sea bass in New York waters. The black sea bass is a protected species due to concerns overfishing.

The conviction aligns with District Attorney Tierney's "Everblue Initiative," which is aimed at protecting Suffolk County's water ecosystems. This initiative involves collaboration with state and local law enforcement agencies to safeguard more than 60% of the county's area, which is covered by water.

"We have a duty to protect Suffolk County’s vital ecosystems from disrespect and ruin," said District Attorney Tierney. He emphasized that the Everblue Initiative aims to preserve the county's natural resources for future generations to enjoy activities like boating, swimming, fishing, and exploring. Tierney stated that this conviction serves as an example of consequences faced by those who exploit natural resources for personal gain.
