Stony Brook ranked #1 among public universities in New York

Long Island schools national rankings | US News & World Report

Stony Brook State University climbed five spots in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings to gain standing as the #1 public university in New York. Stony Brook University is now considered one of the best colleges in the nation.

Stony Brook is the star of the show this year not just in NY, but also ranked #26 among public universities in the U.S. and #58 nationally. This is the highest ranking Stony Brook has ever attained in the history of the U.S. News & World Report reports on colleges and universities. Long Island’s Adelphi and Hofstra also moved up on the list to 163 and 185 respectively.

Every year U.S. News looks at over 1,500 higher education institutions that offer bachelor’s degrees in the United States across 19 different measures of academic quality.

“Stony Brook has long been recognized as a leader supporting the social and economic mobility of our graduates and their families,” said Stony Brook University President Maurie McInnis.

“Our reputation across New York and the world has grown with the City of New York and The Trust for Governors Island’s selection of Stony Brook University as the anchor institution for New York Climate Exchange and the recent $500 million unrestricted endowment gift made by the Simons Foundation. As we celebrate the university’s upward momentum reflected in these new rankings, the commitment of our exceptional students, faculty, and staff, as well as our partners locally and across the globe make our continued progress possible,” McInnis continued.

U.S. News & World reports measured categories such as graduation and retention ranks; Pell graduation rates; peer assessment rank; faculty research metrics; financial resources per student and borrowers’ debt.

Stony Book touted that they scored as #33 in best colleges for veterans, #39 in undergraduate psychology programs and #58 for most innovative schools. Two other Stony Brook undergraduate programs that had not been ranked in 2023 made it into the rankings this year: economics (#88) and business (#135).
