Residents are urged to vote Tuesday, October 24 on a $48.1 million spending plan proposed by the Center Moriches School District for facility renovations and upgrades to its Frowein Road sports complex.

The vote, taking place from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Main Street gymnasium, will involve two propositions: $44,366,500 in renovations across district facilities and a $3,750,000 plan for the installation of a turf field at the high school, along with bleacher and press box renovations.

If approved, the district estimates that the projects will take place over the course of four phases starting in the summer of 2024 with borrowing to pay for them spread out as well. The district is expected to receive 78.2% reimbursement on all eligible projects in the form of New York State Building Aid to offset the total cost of the bonds.

For the average resident, the total increases over the phases of the two bonds will be $70.14 per month or $841.68 annually. The phases and costs are as follows:

Proposition #1

Phase 1 (Summer 2024): $13.65/mo.

Phase 2 (Summer 2025): $15.32/mo.

Phase 3 (Summer 2026 and Summer 2027): $22.87/mo.

Phase 4 (Summer 2027 and Summer 2028): $15.11/mo.

Proposition #2

Phase 1 (Summer 2025): $3.19/mo.

“Many key building systems, which date back to 1978, have reached the end of their useful lifespan and are beyond repair, according to the district. “In fact, current repairs to the boilers cost anywhere from $10,000-$30,000 each year,” district officials said. In addition, the spending plan will “allow the district to address key programmatic needs, including lack of adequate space for our growing fine and performance arts program, renowned IB Programme and innovative STEAM initiatives.”

The bond vote comes on the heels of the Center Moriches Fire District’s attempt to win voter approval for a $17 million addition to its Main Street firehouse, a plan that was rejected three times, most recently by two votes.
