Stony Brook honors outstanding employees at second annual Stony Awards

Stony Brook University held its second annual Stony Awards on November 20 at Flowerfield in St. James, recognizing the contributions of its faculty, staff, and healthcare personnel. The awards aim to honor those who excel in teaching, service, and fostering a sense of community.

Interim President Richard McCormick addressed the finalists: “To every Stony Award finalist in this room, your impact on Stony Brook University is exceptional. You reflect the very best of what we can achieve when we work together. You make this university an inspiring place to be every day.” He praised the nominees for nurturing a culture of belonging and appreciation at the university.

The recipients of the 2024 Stony Awards included Rewa Thompson for Nurturing a Welcoming Campus Culture; Poonamdeep Gill, MD for Excellence in Patient Service; Rick Gatteau and Marianna Savoca for Excellence in Leadership; Tracey Walters for Community Award; Surita Bhatia for SB YOU Award; and Rick Gatteau also received the President’s Stony Brook Champion Award.

Judith Greiman was honored with the new Presidential Award for Extraordinary Service. This award recognizes an employee's commitment to institutional excellence that benefits the university long-term.

The event featured additional awards facilitated by other university offices. Notable winners included Sandeep Mallipattu and James Pierre-Glaude for Outstanding Mentor Award, Kevin McDonnell and Sara Santos for Outstanding Lecturer Award, as well as several Distinguished Professors such as Daniel Raleigh and Adam Singer.

The ceremony was hosted by Blair Tate and highlighted various achievements across disciplines within the university community.
