Firefighters control Dartmouth Drive fire; investigation underway

Andrew Kelly Second Assistant Chief | Smithtown Fire Department

Smithtown's volunteer firefighters responded to a structure fire at 19 Dartmouth Drive on Sunday, March 1st, at 4:30 PM. As the first responders arrived, they observed a significant smoke column from the site, prompting nearby departments to be mobilized.

Third Assistant Chief Daniel Dongvort was among the first on the scene and upgraded the situation to a working structure fire upon discovering that flames had engulfed the carport and were spreading to the attic. The initial engine crew deployed a 1-3/4” hose line to combat the blaze while another crew set up a backup line.

Mutual aid was provided by departments from St. James, Nesconset, and Hauppauge. Meanwhile, Commack Fire Department and Commack Ambulance remained on standby at Smithtown’s Main Firehouse for any additional emergencies. Fortunately, no civilians were injured; however, one firefighter sustained a minor injury.

The fire was controlled within an hour under the leadership of Chief of Department Kevin J. Fitzpatrick. Investigations into the cause are being conducted by the Town of Smithtown Fire Marshal’s Office and Suffolk Police Arson Squad.

Units involved in tackling the incident included several engines and ladders as well as rescue teams and ambulances. All units were released from duty by 6:42 PM.
