Smithtown Fire Department mourns loss of Ex-Chief Richard Keller

The Smithtown Fire Department has announced the passing of Ex-Chief Richard Keller. Chief Keller, who joined the department in 1965, was a member for nearly 58 years. He was a charter member of Engine Co. 5 when it was formed in 1966 and served as Captain for two terms. He also held the position of Chief of the Department from 1981 to 1983.

In addition to his service with the Smithtown Fire Department, Chief Keller served with the FDNY and concluded his career as a firefighter in Hazmat. The department stated, "Chief Keller not only left his mark on the Department but the Volunteer Fire Service as a whole - we are all lucky to have known him and to have worked alongside him."

Today marks what would have been Chief Keller's 87th birthday. The department expressed their sentiments by saying, "Happy Heavenly Birthday, rest easy, Chief."
