The Avram Theater at Stony Brook Southampton is set to host the Long Island premiere of "Underground: Hear the Sound of Freedom." The production will run from January 30 to February 2, with evening shows on Thursday through Saturday and a matinee on Sunday. Tickets are available for $55 online.

Set in 1850, the musical tells the story of an enslaved man's quest for freedom via the Underground Railroad. Adapted from Akil DuPont's short film, it features a score that includes Negro spirituals and melodies of freedom. The production has won several awards, including “Best Production Winner” at the 2024 New York Theater Festival.

Akil DuPont, a storyteller in theater and film, has received numerous accolades throughout his career. His work has been recognized in over 44 film festivals worldwide.

Stony Brook Southampton plans to welcome 600 local high school students from East End districts to special performances aimed at educating them about American history as Black History Month begins on February 1.

This event marks a significant moment for Avram Theater, which has been a cultural venue since the 1980s. Wendy Pearson, vice president for strategic initiatives and executive director of Stony Brook Southampton stated, “Productions like Underground reflect our commitment to revitalizing Stony Brook Southampton as a hub for education, community outreach, and cultural enrichment.”

Pearson also highlighted partnerships with local businesses like Southampton Inn as crucial in supporting arts during off-season periods. She said, “By working together, we can create more opportunities that benefit students, residents, and the wider community.”

The theater was named after Dr. Morrell “Michael” Avram and Maria Avram. It underwent renovations in 2007 to modernize its facilities and now hosts various artistic events alongside its adjoining art gallery.

"Underground: Hear the Sound of Freedom" is presented by Stony Brook Southampton and DuPont Productions LLC with sponsorship from Southampton Inn.
