New York teacher John Melandro receives Milken Educator Award

Judith Brown Clarke Vice President for Equity and Inclusion Chief Diversity Officer | Stony Brook University

John Melandro, a fifth-grade teacher at Tangier Smith Elementary School in Mastic Beach, New York, has been honored with the Milken Educator Award. This award is often referred to as the Oscar of teaching and recognizes outstanding educators for their commitment to excellence in education. Melandro was one of 45 teachers nationwide to receive this accolade this year. He is the only recipient from New York and marks the first awardee from the William Floyd School District.

Melandro's journey into teaching seems almost destined, given that both his parents were educators. He pursued a master's degree in liberal arts at Stony Brook University, following in their academic footsteps. Despite his background, receiving such a prestigious award just six years into his career came as a surprise. "It was just absolute disbelief," he remarked upon hearing his name announced.

In addition to recognition, Melandro received a $25,000 unrestricted cash prize. However, for him, teaching transcends monetary rewards. "I love being in a classroom," he stated. "I feel incredibly lucky to be able to do what I do every day — which is connect with my students and make an impact on their lives."
