Smithtown Fire Department honors late Father Daniel Bitsko by renaming meeting room

Joseph Palazzo Third Assistant Chief | Smithtown Fire Department

The Smithtown Fire Department has announced the renaming of its Main Meeting Room in memory of Father Daniel Bitsko, a respected member of both the department and the local community. The room will now be called the Father Daniel Bitsko Meeting Room, honoring his extensive service and lasting influence.

Father Dan joined the department in 1969 with Hook & Ladder Company 1. Over the years, he contributed in various roles such as responding to fires and driving ambulances. Later, he provided direct support at emergency scenes as 4-2-29. His dedication was recognized through multiple awards including four-time Company 7 Firefighter of the Year and the 2006 Department Firefighter of the Year.

Beyond his local contributions, Father Dan served as Chief Chaplain for New York State and was chaplain for organizations like the Islanders and NASCAR. His commitment extended beyond firefighting, impacting many lives.

“Renaming this room is a fitting tribute to Father Dan’s legacy,” said Chief Timothy Duckham. “His life of service and care for others continues to inspire our work.”

After his passing in 2019, members from Smithtown and other township fire departments traveled to Coaldale, PA, to honor him. The newly named meeting room will serve as a reminder of his contributions.

The announcement took place during a monthly meeting on December 9th. Thomas Buffa, Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners, presented a shadow box containing Father Dan’s fire gear along with a plaque for the meeting room doors. Chief Timothy Duckham accepted these items on behalf of the department. Monsignor Brian McNamara from St. Patrick’s Church concluded with a blessing for those present.
