A widow has filed a lawsuit against Staten Island University Hospital doctors alleging that medical malpractice led to her husband's untimely death.

Plaintiff Susan E. Murphy, acting as the executrix of the estate of her late husband, James B. Murphy, filed a lawsuit against Staten Island University Hospital and two doctors, Rohit Shahani, M.D., and Gregory Alex Maniatis, M.D. Her complaint outlines a series of events beginning when Mr. Murphy sought medical treatment for aortic stenosis at Staten Island University Hospital on February 21, 2023. He was under the care of Drs. Shahani and Maniatis until his death on April 21, 2023. The lawsuit alleges that during a transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure performed on April 5, 2023, significant complications arose due to alleged negligence by the defendants. These complications included coronary artery occlusion and an aortic root dissection, which necessitated an emergency conversion to open-heart surgery. Despite initial signs of recovery post-surgery, Mr. Murphy's condition deteriorated due to further complications, including acute kidney injury and infection in his left groin area.

The lawsuit accuses the defendants of deviating from accepted medical standards by failing to take accurate measurements necessary for the TAVR procedure and using inappropriate surgical techniques. "Defendants failed to obtain and/or record accurate measurements...resulting in an acute complication involving occlusion of the coronary arteries," states the complaint. Additionally, it claims that Mr. Murphy was not adequately informed about the risks associated with his treatment options.

Murphy is seeking compensatory damages exceeding $75,000 for personal injuries suffered by her husband prior to his death as well as loss of consortium following his passing. She also requests relief for economic damages related to funeral expenses and loss of support resulting from Mr. Murphy’s wrongful death.

The plaintiff is represented by attorney Shannon A. Montgomery of the Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Firm. The case was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York under Case No: 1:25-cv-02018.
