This week, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced Jason Funderburke—convicted last month—was officially sentenced to 25 years in prison for Robbery in the First Degree and related charges.
His charges, and subsequent conviction by a jury of his peers, stemmed from an Aug. 2023 incident where he stabbed the owner of an Amityville funeral home during a robbery.
A three-time convicted felon, Funderburke and an accomplice approached the funeral home owner at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 29th, 2023, evidence introduced at trial confirmed. The ill-intentioned pair showed the victim a picture of his own family while demanding money from him at knifepoint.
Upon refusing the request, Funderburke and his partner-in-crime stabbed the victim; they stole his wallet and mobile devices before fleeing the scene.
The victim was treated for his wounds and internal bleeding at Good Samaritan University Hospital.
After being found guilty before Supreme Court Justice Timothy P. Mazzei on March 12th, 2025, DA Tierney said Funerburke’s crime “rocked the community,” but acknowledged that justice had finally been served.
“This conviction makes clear that law enforcement will not tolerate violent crime, and that we will always pursue justice for victims,” he said.
After this week’s sentencing, Tierney expressed further contempt for someone who would harm an individual “who serves our community during their most solemn moments.”
“This sentence will ensure the defendant Funderburke is no longer able to hurt our residents,” Tierney added.
Funerburke’s official counts—all violent-gradefelonious—are as follows: One Count of Robber in the First Degree (Class B); Two counts of Robber in the Second Degree (Class C); and One count of Assault in the Second Degree (Class D).
