New York appliance firm faces suit over alleged pressure cooker malfunction

A mother has filed a lawsuit on behalf of her minor child against a New York-based kitchen appliance company, alleging injuries from a pressure cooker. The complaint names The Steelstone Group, LLC, doing business as Gourmia, as the defendant.

The lawsuit filed by plaintiff Myesha Maggit on behalf of her daughter J.E.B. centers on a Gourmia Multi-Mode Smartpot Pressure Cooker that allegedly malfunctioned due to design defects. The complaint states that, despite claims of safety features such as a patented 12-level lid safety lock system intended to prevent opening while under pressure, the device’s lid could be removed while still pressurized. This allegedly caused hot contents to be expelled onto J.E.B., resulting in significant injuries. The plaintiffs allege that Gourmia knew or should have known of the defect but continued to market and sell the product without sufficient warnings or corrective measures.

The complaint further asserts that J.E.B. sustained burn injuries on September 6, 2022, when the pressure cooker’s lid opened during regular use. It claims that the product’s advertised safety features were inaccurate and misleading. The plaintiffs also reference similar reported incidents involving Gourmia pressure cookers in other states. The claims include negligence and strict liability for defective design and failure to warn consumers of potential hazards.

The plaintiffs seek compensatory damages for medical expenses, lost income, physical pain, emotional distress, and reduced quality of life. They also request punitive damages, interest, and costs associated with the litigation.

The plaintiff is represented by attorneys Randi Kassan of Milberg Coleman Bryson Phillips Grossman PLLC and Adam J. Kress of Johnson Becker PLLC. The case was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York under Case No. 1:25-cv-0302.
