VFW hosts annual 5K run honoring veterans with community support

VFW Post 6249’s 4th Annual 5K Run | Town of Brookhaven

Town of Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner participated in the VFW Post 6249 Joseph P. Dwyer 5K Run alongside local veterans, families, and community members. The event is held annually to honor U.S. veterans' bravery and sacrifice.

The run, organized by VFW Post 6249, attracted a strong regional turnout with participants running or walking the 5K route. It has become a tradition in Rocky Point, uniting people of all ages for this cause.

The event supports the PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran Peer Support Program. Named after Private First Class Joseph P. Dwyer, an Army combat medic from Suffolk County who served in Iraq, the program offers peer-to-peer support for veterans facing challenges like post-traumatic stress and depression. PFC Dwyer was famously photographed carrying an injured Iraqi boy to safety during a mission in Baghdad and later struggled with personal issues before passing away in July 2008 at age 31.

Launched in late 2012, the Dwyer Program is recognized as a successful model for veteran support services, underscoring the legacy of PFC Dwyer.

Councilwoman Bonner commented on the event: “This run is a beautiful example of how our community comes together to honor and remember our veterans,” adding her support for the VFW's efforts.

Post-race activities included refreshments, music, and a ceremony recognizing veterans and organizers. Proceeds from the event will aid veteran services and outreach programs via VFW Post 6249.

Bonner expressed gratitude to the VFW for their leadership and dedication to veteran advocacy.
