Eastport-South Manor Jr.-Sr. High School hosted an inspiring luncheon on May 30 honoring the valedictorians and salutatorians from nine Suffolk County school districts, continuing a long-standing tradition of recognizing the region’s highest-achieving students.

The event, sponsored by State Senator Anthony Palumbo, gathered top graduates from Center Moriches, Comsewogue, Eastport-South Manor, Longwood, Miller Place, Mount Sinai, Port Jefferson, Rocky Point, and Three Village school districts. The celebration follows in the footsteps of former NYS Senator Kenneth P. LaValle, who began the tradition of hosting local academic standouts at the same location.

Senator Palumbo congratulated the students and shared that their accomplishments are now part of formal resolutions passed by the New York State Senate and Assembly, and their names have been entered into the state archives.

“If you need assistance, you know these are the people you can truly rely on,” Palumbo told the students, referencing the elected officials present.

The luncheon also offered students a unique opportunity to engage with elected state leaders, including Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio, Assemblywoman Rebecca Kassay, Senator Dean Murray, Assemblyman Tommy John Schiavoni, and Alice Painter, chief of staff to Assemblyman Joseph DeStefano. Each representative shared their journey into public service, answered thoughtful questions from students, and reflected on learning beyond the classroom.

“There is no set path,” said Sen. Murray. “You forge your own way.” Assemblywoman Kassay encouraged the students to “keep your eyes open, stay curious, and don’t shy away from something that comes to you unexpectedly.”

“We learned a lot from you,” added Assemblywoman Giglio, “and we want to make New York State the best for you.” Assemblyman DeStefano added, “They certainly are the best and brightest.”

Superintendent Joseph A. Steimel of Eastport-South Manor Central School District welcomed the students and praised their hard work and commitment to excellence. Among those recognized were Eastport-South Manor Class of 2025 valedictorian Amanda Seligman and salutatorian Camryn Warsaw, who were acknowledged by Steimel during the celebration.

The event, rich in dialogue and mentorship, recognized academic achievement and invited civic engagement and lifelong learning.
