William Floyd Elementary celebrates successful Math Mania events

William Floyd School District | Official website

William Floyd Elementary School recently hosted Math Mania, a series of math events designed to engage students in competitive mathematics. The initiative was developed by teachers Sydney Bentzig, Christina Cali, and Jenna Mancini. Students qualified for the event through a pre-qualifier exam held in their classrooms.

The first part of the event, Math Madness, took place in March. It was a basketball-themed fluency relay inspired by college basketball's March Madness. During this event, students competed in teams to solve math problems quickly and accurately.

On June 20, the school organized the Math Slam competition. This baseball-themed event focused on problem-solving skills and required strategy and collaboration among participants from kindergarten through fifth grade.

Math Mania celebrated teamwork and mathematical skill at William Floyd Elementary School. The school congratulated all participants and expressed excitement about continuing the tradition next year.

The winners of Math Madness included Team Salerno (Kindergarten), Team Cherouvis (First Grade), Team Mocera (Second Grade), Team Mancini (Third Grade), Team Bentzig (Fourth Grade), and Team Meyer (Fifth Grade).

For Math Slam, champions were Team Bahr (Kindergarten), Team Cherouvis (First Grade), Team Pirnat (Second Grade), Team Mancini/Carroll (Third Grade), Team Bentzig/Marra (Fourth Grade), and Team McKibbin/Cangelosi (Fifth Grade).
