Kids Can Get Up Close with Marine Life at Mastic Beach Conservancy Event

Kids learn about the marine environment in Mastic Beach. | Mastic Beach Conservancy

A hands-on environmental adventure awaits local families this month as the Mastic Beach Conservancy teams up with the Seatuck Environmental Association to host “Kids-N-Sea Creatures Exploration Day” on August 20 at Lawrence Creek Beach.

The free event will introduce children to the wonders of marine life through a Seine Net Drag—an engaging activity in which naturalists and young explorers drag nets through the bay waters to discover the creatures living just beneath the surface. Organizers say the experience is designed to spark curiosity and environmental awareness in kids while offering a fun and educational outdoor experience.

“This is a great way for children to connect with nature and learn about the diverse species that inhabit our bays,” the Conservancy says. “We want them to see firsthand how important it is to protect and understand our local ecosystems.”

Participants will meet at Lawrence Creek Beach on Riviera Drive between Park and Lincoln Drive. No registration is required, and the event is geared toward children ages three and up. Families are encouraged to bring bug spray, water shoes, and a towel.

The Seine Net Drag is one of several community events hosted by the Mastic Beach Conservancy as part of its mission to promote conservation, environmental education, and sustainable use of the local shoreline.
