A Richmond County woman has filed a lawsuit against the City of New York and the NYPD, claiming that she was physically assaulted by law enforcement officers.

The complaint, brought by Rikyra Pringle, states that on June 28, 2024, she was with her children at Faber Pool and Park when an altercation occurred involving her children and unknown individuals. Seeking assistance, Pringle went to a security office, where NYPD Officer James J. Campiglia responded. The lawsuit alleges that instead of intervening to protect her children, Campiglia assaulted Pringle by pushing her down a flight of concrete stairs, causing significant physical injuries and emotional trauma witnessed by her children.

According to the complaint, after the alleged assault, Campiglia accused Pringle of attempting to grab his service weapon, with other officers allegedly supporting his account through false statements. As a result, Pringle was charged with attempted criminal possession of a weapon and resisting arrest. These charges were dismissed on September 10, 2024.

The lawsuit brings claims of excessive force, false arrest and imprisonment, malicious prosecution under state law and 42 U.S.C. § 1983, negligence in hiring and training by the City of New York, and violations of Article I, § 12 of the New York State Constitution. The plaintiff seeks damages for physical injuries, psychological distress, and punitive damages.

The plaintiff is represented by attorney Michael F. Pecorella of Shulman & Hill PLLC. The case was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York under Case No. 1:23-cv-5116.
