Some 20 published authors who once walked the halls of William Floyd High School will return home this month to share their stories, sign books, and inspire the next generation. The event, titled Stories That Started Here: Honoring the Storytellers of Our Community, will take place on Saturday, September 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library, in partnership with the William Floyd Alumni Association.
The event, presented in partnership with the William Floyd School District Alumni Association, will feature alumni authors of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, children’s literature, and screenplays. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear readings, join storytime sessions for children, and meet authors at the “Hall of Authors,” where book signings and personal conversations will take place throughout the day.
Among the featured writers are Kelly McMasters, a nationally bestselling author whose memoir Welcome to Shirley: A Memoir of an Atomic Town was recognized as an Oprah Top 5 Summer Read, and Brian Heinz, a celebrated children’s author known nationwide for his vivid, nature-inspired storytelling.
“This event showcases the incredible talent that has grown out of our community,” said Lonna Castro, Library Director. “We are proud to welcome these alumni back home and to inspire today’s residents—especially our young readers—to see that their own stories matter.”
Joseph Maiorana, President of the Library Board of Trustees, added: “The title Stories That Started Here is perfect. These accomplished writers began their journeys right here in the William Floyd community. Their return is both a celebration of their achievements and a reminder of the potential within every student and family in our district.”
The event is free and open to the public. Families, students, and community members of all ages are encouraged to attend, meet the authors, and celebrate the voices that began their journey in Shirley, Mastic, Mastic Beach, and Moriches.
