Students in the William Floyd High School Barbering Academy recently participated in a discussion about mental health awareness led by Jason Alexander Sr., co-founder of the Shaheem “BlueDaBarber363” Foundation. The foundation, named after Alexander’s son Shaheem who died by suicide, focuses on supporting mental health and providing resources for students interested in barbering.

During his visit, Alexander spoke to students about the importance of seeking help during difficult times. He encouraged them not to feel ashamed or weak if they are struggling. He also provided advice on managing challenging situations and informed students about a monthly men’s mental health forum organized by the foundation.

The creation of the Shaheem “BlueDaBarber363” Foundation was inspired by Shaheem’s passing. Along with co-founders James Hall Jr. and Derrick Miller, Alexander works to promote mental health awareness and assist aspiring barbers. Each year, the foundation awards a scholarship to a graduating barbering student and donates barbering kits containing tools necessary for the licensing exam. This marks the third consecutive year that donations have been made to the William Floyd Barbering Academy.

“Bringing attention to the issue of mental health is one of the ways in which Jason honors and keeps Shaheem’s memory alive,” according to information shared during the event.

The Barbering Academy at William Floyd High School is part of its Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, which offers eight academies and five pathways in fields such as business, technology, automotive, cosmetology, culinary arts, medical assisting, marine & motorsports, home design & carpentry, and certified personal trainer & nutritionist programs. The barbering curriculum covers skills including hair cutting and styling techniques as well as business knowledge needed for operating a barbershop. Students who complete the program are prepared for New York State Licensing exams.

William Floyd’s CTE program aims to equip students with practical skills that support both career readiness and further education opportunities.

“Special thanks to Jason Alexander for taking the time to have such an important conversation with the students and to the entire Shaheem ‘BlueDaBarber363’ Foundation for their continuous generosity toward William Floyd students,” school officials stated.
