Sayville Football Earns Rutgers Trophy

Sayville Football has won the Rutgers Trophy, awarded to the best team in Suffolk County. The Golden Flashes capped off an unforgettable season by finishing 12-0, securing their eighth Long Island Championship and bringing home the seventh Rutgers Trophy in program history. Sayville earned this prestigious honor at the Suffolk County Football Coaches Association dinner, where the program was officially recognized as Suffolk’s most outstanding team.

Sayville accumulated 211 total points and an impressive 39 first-place votes to claim the 79th Rutgers Trophy. Ward Melville placed second with 66 points and four first-place votes, while Bayport-Blue Point and East Islip finished in a tie with 65 points each. The voting reflected Sayville’s dominance throughout the season and the program’s continued excellence on the field.

The Golden Flashes completed their undefeated season with a thrilling 42-35 victory over Wantagh in the Long Island Class III championship game. Halfback Tristan Vitale delivered a remarkable performance, rushing for 239 yards and five touchdowns. Quarterback Patrick Coan added 229 rushing yards of his own along with a touchdown, helping propel Sayville to the championship win. Their combined efforts showcased the explosive and balanced offense that powered the team all season.

Sayville’s success was not limited to standout individual performances. The team displayed exceptional discipline, resilience, and unity in all phases of the game. Strong offensive line play created consistent opportunities for the run game, while the defense, known for timely stops and physicality, played a key role in sealing close victories. Guidance from the coaching staff also proved vital, as strategic adjustments and preparation kept the team ahead of opponents week after week.

This historic season further solidifies Sayville Football’s place among Suffolk County’s elite programs, adding another memorable chapter to the Golden Flashes’ proud legacy. Their achievements will inspire future teams statewide.
