The Institute for Ocean Conservation Science (IOCS) at Stony Brook University has received a $1.6 million donation to establish a research fund aimed at supporting its ongoing aquatic research efforts.

Founded in 2003, the IOCS is part of the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences and focuses on advancing ocean conservation through scientific research. The institute conducts applied studies that address gaps in knowledge related to ocean restoration, conservation, and protection, with the goal of informing more effective conservation actions.

Dean of the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences Paul Shepson expressed appreciation for the contribution. “We are so grateful for this generous support of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science,” Shepson said. “The IOCS is doing transformative research to help save our oceans and ecosystems, and this gift will enable them to continue their critical work.”

The new research fund is expected to strengthen the university’s commitment to innovative environmental research and education, which aims to benefit both local communities and global ocean health.

Further details about the donation can be found in an article by Christine McGrath on SB Matters.
