John Hill Deputy Director for Science and Technology | Brookhaven National Laboratory

Brookhaven National Laboratory is hosting an event titled "Fascinating Physics" on September 15, 2024. The event will feature a variety of activities designed to engage attendees of all ages in the wonders of physics.

One of the scheduled activities is "Fantastic Forces," a show where a circus performer will present tricks accompanied by scientific explanations. This show will take place at Berkner Auditorium at noon, 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m., with doors opening 15 minutes before each session.

Another highlight is "STAR-struck!," a talk that offers a virtual visit to the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Gene Van Buren and Rongrong Ma from the Physics Department will present this talk, which is recommended for individuals aged 10 and older. Sessions are scheduled throughout the day in the Hamilton Seminar Room, Chemistry Building (Bldg. 555).

The event also includes tours of Brookhaven's Superconducting Magnet Division and Tandem Van de Graaff facility. Both tours are suitable for ages 10 and older and start in Berkner Hall Room B, with bus transportation provided to each location. Attendees should arrive by 2:30 p.m. for the last bus.

Additionally, participants can learn about sPHENIX, the newest experiment at RHIC. This activity showcases a powerful magnet within the sPHENIX detector that helps scientists measure properties of some of the universe's smallest building blocks.
