Brookhaven Lab announces 2023 Pinnacle Award winners

In 2023, Brookhaven National Laboratory honored 20 staff members with its highest accolades: the Pinnacle Science & Technology, Engineering, Brookhaven, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, and for the first time, the Distinguished Administrator Awards.

“With these awards, we honored a select group of staff members for their exceptional contributions,” said Lab Director JoAnne Hewett. “Our Laboratory is built upon two pillars: the talent of a dedicated staff and the world-class facilities and tools at our disposal.”

The Science & Technology Awards recognize distinguished contributions to the Laboratory's science and technology objectives. The 2023 recipients were Valentina Bisogni from National Synchrotron Light Source II; Steve Kettell from the Physics Department; Bjoern Schenke from the Physics Department; Aihong Tang from the Physics Department; and James Wishart from the Chemistry Division.

Engineering Awards are presented to recognize distinguished contributions to the Laboratory's engineering and computing objectives. The 2023 recipients were David Bergman from National Synchrotron Light Source II; Russell Feder from Collider-Accelerator Department; John Kuczewski from Instrumentation Division; Seth Nemesure from Collider-Accelerator Department; and Joel Vasquez from Physics Department.

Brookhaven Awards are given to recognize key contributors in support functions whose performance and achievements represent outstanding service to the Laboratory. The 2023 recipients were Joe Gettler from Stakeholder Relations Office; Stephen Giordano from Information Technology Division; Maria Pacella from Legal Office; Vincent Racaniello from Environmental Protection Division; and Timothy Welty from Radiological Control Division.

The Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Staff Awards recognize key contributors who demonstrate leadership qualities that exemplify the ideals of inclusion, diversity, and equity into practical action. The 2023 recipients were Ketevi Assamagan and Mickey Chiu, both from the Physics Department.

Distinguished Administrator Awards went to Mary Campbell of Environment, Biology, Nuclear Science & Nonproliferation Directorate; Linda Hanlon of Energy & Photon Sciences Directorate; and Donna Pfeiffer of Operations Support and Planning Division.
