The South Shore Press Man on the Street asked residents what they thought about the tax hike proposed by County Executive Ed Romaine:

“I say no to more taxes since l don’t see any direct benefit from them. Tax hikes should be brought up for a vote by the people. We need to see what we’re getting so we can decide. I would vote no unless they show us we’re getting something good for our money.”—Tim Monahan, Jr., Patchogue.

“We already pay too much in taxes, and we don’t know where it all goes. Compared to other parts of the country, we pay far more. People can’t afford to live here or raise a family; they’re moving away. The government should be figuring out ways to cut taxes.”—Ryan Mannion

“Honestly, I’m okay with it. We read about crime all the time, so they’re going to add police, which we need. It’s good that it’s under the state tax cap.”—Jeff Matheson, Manor Park

“A few dollars more is not a big deal. A bigger police presence and more enforcement are worth it. More importantly, New York needs stricter laws when it comes to crime.”—Lorraine Matheson, Manor Park

“I’m not for taxes, but it’s the only way revenue can come into the county. If you live here, you have to pay the taxes.”—Joe Colgan, Center Moriches
