To honor all who made the ultimate sacrifice defending freedom here at home and around the world, Rocky Point Middle School eighth-grade students placed a memorial wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This was one part of the eighth-grade class educational trip to Washington D.C.

“We were honored to be part of the ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier,” Rocky Point Middle School Principal Dawn Meyers said. “It really put into context the true reason of Memorial Day for our students and helped them fully understand the sacrifices of American service members. The ceremony was an important part of the multifaceted educational experience combining history, civics, politics, culture and science, fostering critical thinking, civic engagement, and a deeper appreciation for the complexities of the world around them.”

Located at Arlington National Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier holds the remains of those who died in battle during World War I. Remains of other conflicts were added to the sacred resting place in 1958 and 1984.
