Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Through Art

Mikela LLagzha Atariguana and Waverly Hoffman. | Southampton Union Free School District

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Black History Month, Southampton High School Mural and Set Design students worked collaboratively for over a month to create a mural of handprints that represent the feeling Claudette Colvin had when she was told to get up from her seat on the bus when traveling home from school in 1955. Colvin felt that Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman's hands were on her shoulders keeping her in the seat. The four-foot mural will be auctioned to support the East End Arts’ Art Scholarship Fund.
