Two propositions totalling $48.1 million for improvements in the Center Moriches School District were shot down by residents by almost a 2-1 margin in a vote that came on the heels of the defeat of a $17.9 million plan for the fire department.

Proposition 1, $44.3 million for facility improvements, went down 610-341, while Proposition 2, $3.75 million to update the school’s athletic spaces, was rejected 690-258. “The district will reflect upon these results and begin planning its next steps in the coming weeks,” school officials said. “We will keep the community informed of any new developments.”

The school propositions drew more voters than the fire department, which did not have its project to expand the existing firehouse approved after three tries. In the latest referendum, the measure failed by 2 votes doesn’t add up (221-201).
