The Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats had a tall task this past week as they would take on unbeaten Commack in a match that would prove to be a blowout in favor of the Cougars.

Commack was led by Sofia Vasselman in this contest. The junior guard is one of the best outside shooters in Suffolk County who came off a disappointing outing against Islip earlier in the week. Vasselman had knocked down just one three-pointer and finished with seven points.

Vasselman then knocked down seven three-pointers and finished with 26 points as host Commack defeated Shoreham-Wading River, 54-21, in non-league girls basketball play on Wednesday morning.

The unbeaten Cougars were without one of its better players in Maya Khan, who reportedly missed the game because of injury. Vasselman proved that the Commack team is full of a ton of weapons that would prove to be too much for Shoreham-Wading River, who won the Suffolk Class A title last year.

On top of 26 points, the junior guard added 10 rebounds and seven assists while scoring 12 of the Cougars’ 15 first-quarter points.

Commack led 25-7 at halftime against a Shoreham-Wading River team that was missing some key players themselves, thus putting them at 500 this season as they fell to 4-4 on the season.

The lone bright spot for the Wildcats was Grayce Kitchen as she had nine points for Shoreham-Wading River in the blowout loss.

The Wildcats will be back in action this week as they will take on Bayport-Blue Point on the third of January followed up by a road game against Mt. Sinai on the fifth.
