Brookhaven Lab honors engineers with prestigious awards

Thomas Daniels Associate Laboratory Director, Facilities & Operations | Brookhaven National Laboratory

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory has announced the recipients of its 2024 Engineering Awards, recognizing notable contributions to the laboratory's engineering and computing goals.

Jesse Fite from the Collider-Accelerator Department has been acknowledged for his work over a 17-year period. Fite led significant projects including upgrades at the LINAC and NASA Space Radiation Laboratory, as well as design initiatives for various programs such as the Energy Recovery Linac and Medical Isotope Program. He is currently involved in developing prototype power couplers for the Electron-Ion Collider.

Robert ‘Rob’ Pisani of the Physics Department has been recognized for his expertise in gases and gas systems for nuclear physics detectors. Since 2017, he has worked on the sPHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, leading teams to build complex cooling and gas circulation systems despite challenges like COVID-19 restrictions.

Eric Raguzin from the Instrumentation Department contributed to electronic design within their Data Acquisition group. His recent work includes advancements in neutrino research and contributions to lunar operations through projects like LuSEE-Night. Raguzin also focuses on mentoring new talent and engaging with community outreach.

Daniel Weiss, serving in the Collider-Accelerator Department’s Vacuum Group, was noted for his role as an engineering system manager during construction phases of critical components like RHIC's superconducting magnet arc cryostats. His efforts have pushed performance boundaries at Brookhaven beyond initial specifications.

A team consisting of Wei Xu, Weihe Xu, Juan Zhou, Hanfei Yan, and Evgeny Nazaretski from NSLS-II developed a compact solution for nano-scale imaging using x-ray microscopy technology. Their innovation enhances NSLS-II’s status as a leading synchrotron facility globally recognized for hard x-ray diffractive optics development.

These awards were part of Brookhaven Lab's broader recognition event held on November 13th celebrating employee achievements across various departments.
