Felon sentenced to life after being found guilty of weapon possession

Raymond A. Tierney District Attorney | Suffolk County District Attorney's Office

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced that Tremayne Winfield, aged 39 from Amityville, has been sentenced to 17 years to life in prison. This follows a jury's decision finding him guilty of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree and related charges for possessing a loaded firearm.

District Attorney Tierney stated, "The sentence handed down to this defendant reflects the gravity of his offenses and our commitment to removing dangerous individuals from our streets." He added that this outcome is expected to deter others and enhance neighborhood safety in Suffolk County.

The trial evidence revealed that on April 28, 2023, Suffolk County Police Department officers executed a search warrant at a Bay Shore residence. During the search, they discovered Winfield with a loaded 9 mm handgun equipped with an extended magazine containing multiple rounds of ammunition.

On June 21, 2024, following a jury trial before Supreme Court Justice John B. Collins, Winfield was found guilty of one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (a Class C felony) and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree (Class D felonies).

Winfield's criminal history includes previous convictions for multiple felony offenses in Suffolk County. These include Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (a Class C violent felony), Assault in the Second Degree (a Class D violent felony), Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree (a Class D felony), and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree (a Class A misdemeanor).
