Stony Brook University recently hosted an event aimed at helping students explore their career paths through interactive activities. The event, titled 'Color of Your Parachute,' took place in SAC Ballroom B and featured the use of colorful parachutes to engage students in thinking about their career options and skill sets.

The initiative was co-led by a Faculty Fellow from the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) and Student Engagement & Activities (SEA). Various university departments participated, including the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE), Career Center, Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities (URECA), and others.

Richard Tomczak, director of faculty engagement at DUE, highlighted U-RISE as “a one-stop-shop for anything related to student success at the university.” He emphasized the importance of transformative education and enhancing the student experience.

Marina Fandaros, assistant director for Undergraduate Research Engagement, discussed URECA's role in pairing students with faculty mentors for independent research. She noted that the event allowed students to engage meaningfully with peers who are also exploring their interests.

BME Assistant Professor Mei Lin Chan expressed her enthusiasm for the support from various departments and how it facilitated connections among students. She stated, “It’s a great way to help students ‘find themselves’ and provide opportunities for our staff members to share all their great resources.”

Gillian Farnan from SEA appreciated working with Dr. Chan on creating an interactive event different from traditional learning methods. “Working with Dr. Chan is no different,” she said. “She provided an idea that’s interactive and different than the traditional ways students may be learning how to develop their college careers.”

Students who attended shared positive feedback about the experience. Masrurah Morshed ‘26 mentioned gaining motivation and direction for her career path, while Mohammad Kader ‘27 found valuable guidance and mentorship opportunities.

Simone Binneman, a diversity career coach in the Career Center, remarked on how the activities helped students connect with campus resources in a memorable way. She noted that it offered insights into tools like Stony Brook’s Eight Career Communities.

The event drew inspiration from the book "What Color Is Your Parachute?" which encourages readers to align personal strengths with suitable careers. Peer mentors planned follow-up sessions with participants to continue supporting their career development journey.
