On February 2, 2021, the Smithtown Fire Department received a notification from Newsday about a complaint regarding a Blue Line Flag placed on their rescue truck. In response to this, the department discussed the issue and decided to replace the flag with an American Flag. The decision was described as difficult because it does not reflect any change in their support for law enforcement partners.

The department acknowledged that this matter evokes strong feelings within the community but emphasized their commitment to focusing on life and property protection for Smithtown residents.
