Luke Zadrazil shares aviation journey with Tangier Smith Elementary students via Zoom

Kevin Meyer Board Member | William Floyd School District

Third-grade students at Tangier Smith Elementary School received a virtual visit from Luke Zadrazil, a freshman at Averett University in Danville, Virginia. Luke, who is aspiring to become a certified flight instructor and commercial airline pilot, was invited to speak with the students via Zoom. The session was organized by Mrs. Caitlin Contes and Ms. Michelle Montalbano.

Luke shared his journey towards earning his private pilot license during high school, and his aspirations in aviation, inspired by a dialogue with a professional pilot. He encouraged the young students to pursue their dreams, stating, "Follow their dreams and pursue their hobbies, as one day it could become their career."

During the session, students inquired about his motivations for choosing a career in aviation, how he discovered his passion for flying, and if he had ever flown with his mother, Ms. Chanda Zadrazil, who serves as the school's STEM teacher. Ms. Montalbano remarked on the possible inspiration Luke may have sparked in the students.

Luke shared that although he has not yet flown with his mother, he aims to do so in the upcoming summer. The class plans to write persuasive letters to encourage Ms. Zadrazil to join him for a flight, though they believe she will be easily persuaded.

Luke enjoys flying over Long Island, appreciating the scenic sunsets. He recalled an experience flying over Tangier Smith Elementary School while his mother observed from the ground. Currently, he is learning about flying safely through clouds, noting the scientific aspects that his studies are preparing him for. Luke appreciates his college for its small size, which offers him personalized attention and a sense of community, allowing him to apply classroom knowledge practically.
