Stony Brook University strengthens collaboration with Brookhaven National Laboratory

Richard J. Reeder, Associate Vice President for Brookhaven Affairs | Stony Brook University

For nearly thirty years, Stony Brook University (SBU) has fostered a collaborative relationship with Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), one of the nation's leading research facilities. This partnership has allowed SBU faculty and students to advance scientific discovery through access to cutting-edge equipment and expertise.

Rich Reeder, associate vice president for Brookhaven National Laboratory Affairs, highlighted the benefits of this collaboration: “Because of Stony Brook’s proximity — less than 20 miles from campus — and close relationship with BNL, many of our faculty have established joint research projects that leverage the capabilities of both institutions. Notable examples include the development of new energy storage technologies by Distinguished Professor Esther Takeuchi’s team and the creation of communication testbeds for quantum networking by Associate Professor Eden Figueroa’s physics group, both areas that will enable future advances in critical technologies.”

Carl W. Lejuez, executive vice president and provost, emphasized the impact of this partnership on scientific progress: “Stony Brook’s longstanding and extraordinarily productive partnership with Brookhaven National Lab offers our faculty and students the chance to more deeply explore their fields, push the boundaries of science and make discoveries today that could transform our tomorrow. The collaborations between Stony Brook and Brookhaven researchers helps demonstrate the immeasurable contribution of scientific and academic research to society and the world.”

The latest issue of Stony Brook University Magazine features an exploration into four jointly appointed faculty members who are advancing research across various fields.
