Quantum technology advances focus on scalability challenges at Stony Brook University

Wendy Pearson Vice President for Strategic Initiatives | Stony Brook University

Scale remains a significant challenge in the field of quantum technology. Although advances in superconducting qubits and laser-cooled atoms have transitioned from laboratory experiments to influencing NASDAQ-listed companies, the primary obstacle is integrating these advancements into large-scale architectures that can make a tangible impact.

Stony Brook University is addressing this issue through practical experiments. In collaboration with Brookhaven National Laboratory, researchers are laying the groundwork for scalable quantum networks. Their work includes achievements such as record-breaking quantum teleportation and establishing free-space links across Long Island.

Kevin Gardner, vice president for research and innovation at Stony Brook, considers these initiatives a pivotal moment. “Along with major research grants and collaborations, you start to see the vision: we’re striving to make this region the hub of a future quantum economy.”
