The William Floyd High School boys’ varsity basketball team held its first annual Coach Darrell Sumpter Memorial Game during a recent matchup against Sachem North. The event honored the late Coach Darrell Sumpter, a former varsity assistant coach who passed away last year at age 51. Known in the community as "Coach D," Sumpter was recognized for his dedication to both boys’ and girls’ basketball programs and for helping establish the local youth basketball program and booster club.
To commemorate Coach D, the Colonials left an empty seat on their bench, decorated with a memorial t-shirt, clipboard, and Mamba candy—items he was known to give to players. Before the game began, public address announcer Michael Feldstein delivered a tribute reflecting on Sumpter’s life and contributions, followed by a moment of silence.
On the court, William Floyd secured a 63-51 victory over Sachem North for their first win of the season. The opening quarter ended with senior Sharod Sutton hitting a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give his team a lead they maintained throughout the game. The Colonials expanded their advantage in the second quarter and finished the third with a 27-point margin.
Seniors Jesse Durham and JJ Smith each scored 12 points in the game, while Sutton added nine points from three-pointers. Speaking to Newsday after the match about Coach Sumpter’s influence, Sutton said: “I felt like his presence was there the way we were playing and moving the ball,” adding “I just know he was watching.”
The next scheduled game for William Floyd is set for Tuesday, December 9 against Longwood at home.
