Two students from William Floyd High School have been selected to participate in the 2025 New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) Virtual Art Exhibit. Lyla Angamarca Reino, a member of the Class of 2025, and Emma Gunning, a current junior, created ceramic works that will be featured in this annual event.
The NYSSBA Virtual Art Exhibit is organized each year by the New York State Art Teachers Association (NYSATA) and showcases student artwork from across New York State.
“It means a lot that both Lyla and Emma were included in this exhibit to represent NYSATA Region 10,” said WFHS ceramics teacher Tina Higgins, who submitted both pieces for consideration. “I am so proud of both of them for this statewide nod to their creative endeavors!”
In addition to being included in the virtual exhibit, the students’ work was displayed at the NYSSBA Convention held in New York City in October.
Lyla Angamarca Reino’s piece was inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s painting “Starry Night.” She created a dinner set featuring imagery from the painting using slab-building and subtractive carving techniques to achieve texture and structure.
Emma Gunning designed a clay box with a calico cat on its removable top. She also used slab-building methods and sculpted details such as the cat’s head and paws. Ms. Higgins noted Emma’s attention to detail in adding texture and glaze to her piece.
Both students’ inclusion highlights the creative achievements of William Floyd High School’s art program.
