Juan Jimenez named finalist for Blavatnik Regional Awards
UPTON, N.Y. — The Blavatnik Family Foundation and the New York Academy of Sciences have recognized chemical engineer Juan Jimenez as a finalist in the 2024 Blavatnik Regional Awards for Young Scientists. Jimenez’s catalysis science research at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory focuses on converting climate change-driving gases into industrially useful materials.
Brookhaven hosts hybrid return for annual NSLS-II & CFN Users' Meeting
After five years of virtual-only gatherings, the annual National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) and Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) Users’ Meeting returned as a combined on-site/remote event. Most of the 531 registrants — representing 32 countries and 140 institutions — participated in person. Held May 13-17 at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory, the meeting focused on the continued growth and impact of NSLS-II and CFN, which are DOE Office of Science user facilities at Brookhaven.
Brookhaven Lab hosts "Fascinating Physics" event on September 15
Brookhaven National Laboratory is hosting an event titled "Fascinating Physics" on September 15, 2024. The event will feature a variety of activities designed to engage attendees of all ages in the wonders of physics.
Experts discuss flood impacts at Climate READi Northeast Regional Workshop
On the heels of a Northeastern rainstorm that flooded towns on Long Island and claimed at least two lives in Connecticut, teams of scientists, engineers, and representatives of local power and transportation utilities met to discuss the increasing frequency of severe weather and its impacts on crucial infrastructure. The timing for the meeting at New York’s Kennedy International Airport on August 21-22, 2024, was coincidental. However, the recent storm set the stage for discussions about how power systems and dependent services will respond to a changing climate.
First neutrinos detected at Fermilab short-baseline detector
Scientists working on the Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND) at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory have identified the detector’s first neutrino interactions.
New catalyst approach boosts efficiency in CO2 reduction
UPTON, N.Y. — One of the most promising strategies being investigated to mitigate emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) is the process of electrochemical reduction. In this approach, electrical energy is used to convert recaptured CO2 into usable products and fuels, such as methanol and ethanol. However, a challenge has been finding a catalyst that is efficient and fast enough for practical use.
Brookhaven scientist awarded Goldhaber Fellowship for clean energy research
Steve Farrell, a research associate at the Inner-Shell Spectroscopy (ISS) beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), has been selected as one of 2024’s Distinguished Goldhaber Fellows. These prestigious three-year fellowships are awarded to exceptional candidates who have demonstrated their expertise and talent as well as their drive to pursue independent research. At the end of their appointment, fellows are encouraged to apply for scientific staff positions at the Laboratory. Farrell aims to focus on projects related to clean, affordable energy...
DOE announces RENEW initiative support for five pathway summer schools
As part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce (RENEW) initiative, Brookhaven Lab and Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will collaborate on an immersive summer school designed to provide college freshmen and recent high school graduates with working knowledge and skills for “big data” and artificial intelligence/machine learning. The summer school will utilize a hybrid model, reflecting how modern-day science is performed, while leveraging the unique strengths and capabilities of each lab. Big data applications will...
Brookhaven announces winners of 2024 Joanna Fowler Award
The Chemistry Division at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory and Brookhaven Women in Science (BWIS) have announced Paris Watson of Johns Hopkins University, Michele Myong of Brookhaven Lab, and Edelmy Marin Bernardez of Stony Brook University as the recipients of the 2024 Joanna Fowler Award in the Chemical and Biochemical Sciences. Each recipient will receive an award of $3,500, funded by BWIS and Brookhaven Lab’s Chemistry Division, Energy & Photon Sciences Directorate, and Human Resources.
Brookhaven lab preserves its rich history through extensive archival efforts
In December 2019, after a rewarding 30 years at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory — including 22 in the Lab’s Media and Communications Office — Jane Koropsak retired.
Scientists discover heaviest exotic antimatter nucleus at RHIC
Scientists studying particle collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) have discovered a new kind of antimatter nucleus, the heaviest ever detected. The nucleus, known as antihyperhydrogen-4, is composed of four antimatter particles: an antiproton, two antineutrons, and one antihyperon.
Battelle names Anibal Boscoboinik 'Inventor Of The Year
Anibal Boscoboinik, a materials scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory, has been named an “Inventor of the Year” by Battelle Memorial Institute. Battelle, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, partners with Stony Brook University to form Brookhaven Science Associates, which manages the Lab on behalf of DOE’s Office of Science. Battelle manages or co-manages nine national labs across the country.
New record set in search for dark matter
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has announced new results from the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, the world's most sensitive dark matter detector. The findings narrow down possibilities for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), a leading dark matter candidate.
Brookhaven lab calibrates advanced spectrometer for Alabama forest research
The William Bankhead National Forest in Alabama is set to host sophisticated scientific instruments as part of a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) research facility aimed at studying the connections between the forest and atmosphere. The DOE’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility will ensure these instruments' precision and accuracy before installation.
Catalyst converts methane directly into methanol in single-step process
Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, along with collaborating institutions, have developed a highly selective catalyst capable of converting methane into methanol in a single-step reaction. This advancement is detailed in a recent publication in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
Scientists observe rare element promethium forming chemical bonds
A team of scientists led by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) recently observed how the rare element promethium forms chemical bonds in an aqueous solution. The research was conducted using the Beamline for Materials Measurement (BMM) at the National Synchrotron Light Source II, a DOE Office of Science user facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Brookhaven Lab team studies "excitons" behavior in novel magnetic material
A research group led by scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory has uncovered details about the formation and behavior of mobile, microscopic, particle-like objects called “excitons” in a class of materials known as van der Waals magnets. Their work helps establish a picture of the complex relationship between the optical and magnetic properties of these materials, which display intriguing characteristics that could one day lead to brand-new technologies based on magnetism, such as information storage.
The Federal Government Reaches a Dubious Distinction on the Debt
The United States government has just reached a dubious and disturbing financial benchmark that will hurt already suffering families: more money is now being spent on just the interest payments on the almost $35 trillion national debt than on national defense or Medicare.
