Student's passion for eye research driven by personal experience
Yuu-U (“Loy”) Hashimoto, a junior majoring in biology with a minor in applied mathematics and statistics, has been named the URECA researcher of the month for October. Since March 2024, she has been working under the mentorship of Eugene Serebryany, an assistant professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. Their research focuses on protein aggregation in the eye lens and explores a potential non-surgical treatment involving myo-inositol, a metabolite found in the human eye lens.

This organization combines school curriculum with pop culture trivia in a TV-game show format to create an immersive experience. The event, sponsored by the John S. Doctoral student awarded fellowship for research on medical technology security

Professor Jeff Ge receives prestigious service award from engineering society
Professor Jeff Ge of the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been honored with the Dedicated Service Award by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). This award recognizes voluntary service to the society and acknowledges "outstanding performance, demonstrated effective leadership, prolonged and committed service, devotion, enthusiasm, and faithfulness." The accolade was presented to Ge during the 2024 ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences held in Washington, DC from August 25 to 28.
Stony Brook's Yi-Xian Qin receives prestigious biomedical engineering award
Yi-Xian Qin, a distinguished professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University, has been selected to receive the 2025 Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) CMBE Christopher Jacobs Award for Excellence in Leadership. Qin also holds positions as director of the Orthopaedic Bioengineering Research Laboratory and co-director of the Institute for Engineering-Driven Medicine.

Historic Brookhaven Photos on Display at Clerk's Office
A gallery of historical photos is on display at the Brookhaven Clerk's office at Town Hall in Farmingville. "In honor of our town's rich history, we have placed historic images around our office to reflect on and admire how far our town has come," said Brookhaven Clerk Kevin LaValle, who worked with Town Historian Barbara Russell in curating the collection. "Our Town has 369 years of rich history, and I take great pride in serving this historic community as the 44th Town Clerk," LaValle said.
