Yi-Xian Qin, a distinguished professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University, has been selected to receive the 2025 Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) CMBE Christopher Jacobs Award for Excellence in Leadership. Qin also holds positions as director of the Orthopaedic Bioengineering Research Laboratory and co-director of the Institute for Engineering-Driven Medicine.

Qin will deliver a lecture and be honored at the 2025 BMES Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering (CMBE) Conference in Carlsbad, California from January 3 to 6. The annual award, established in 2019, honors Christopher R. Jacobs, co-founder and council member of the CMBE Special Interest Group under BMES. It recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership within the Cell and Molecular Bioengineering community.

“I am excited and humbled to receive the 2025 BMES CMBS Christopher Jacobs Award,” Qin said. “Dr. Jacobs is a pioneer in the field of bone cellular and molecular engineering... It’s a great honor to receive this prestigious award.”

Qin will be recognized alongside Chris Chen, MD, Warren Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Boston University, recipient of the CMBE’s Shu Chien Achievement Award; and Ning Jenny Jiang, an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania, recipient of the CMBE Momentum Award.

An innovator in bone research, Qin has published over 180 peer-reviewed articles and holds U.S. patents on technologies such as ultrasound diagnostic imaging and mechanical stimulation for musculoskeletal diseases. His work includes predicting bone loss in microgravity during long-term space missions.

Qin earned his master’s degree and PhD from Stony Brook University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is a Fellow in several organizations including AIMBE, ASBMR, BMES, IAMBE, and IAA. He also serves as Executive Editor-in-Chief for Mechanobiology in Medicine.
