Suffolk County Community College has renamed its nursing school to honor Jane F. Shearer, who dedicated over 30 years of service to the institution. The new name, Jane F. Shearer School of Nursing, pays tribute to her contributions as the Eastern Campus Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and President of the Guild of Administrative Officers before her passing from cancer in 2019.

Jane's family has endowed a scholarship for nursing students at the college and decided to further commemorate her by establishing the school's new name. Dr. Edward Bonahue, President of Suffolk County Community College, remarked on the significance: “Naming an academic program or campus space for an individual or an organization is a meaningful way to signify a valued connection between the namesake and the college.” He added that Jane’s dedication will continue to inspire future nursing leaders.

John Vidovich, Jane’s brother, expressed gratitude: “Suffolk meant so much to Jane, and Jane meant so much to so many people.” The naming gift aims to continue her legacy by supporting future generations of nursing students.

A luncheon hosted by the college’s Foundation announced that proceeds would help cover costs associated with the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX), necessary for becoming a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse in New York. This support is vital as many students juggle multiple jobs alongside their studies.

Ed Romaine, Suffolk County Executive and honorary luncheon chair, acknowledged this contribution's impact on healthcare quality in Suffolk County: "Jane's family has made a remarkable gift that will ensure the quality of healthcare being delivered across Suffolk County will always be of the highest quality."

Suffolk County Community College serves over 21,000 students within more than 100 programs as part of SUNY. The Suffolk Community College Foundation supports student access through scholarships and other initiatives aimed at enhancing educational opportunities.
