Brookhaven Town's Acquisition of 33 Acres in Manorville: Expanding Green Space

Brookhaven Town is making strides in environmental conservation with its plan to acquire a 33-acre parcel in Manorville, currently owned by the Tyler J. Histand Family Trust. This initiative aligns with the town's commitment to expanding public green spaces, offering walking and biking opportunities.

The town is set to purchase the tract for $668,580, and the Histand Family Trust has accepted the offer. Complementing this effort, Brookhaven secured a $300,000 state Community Forest Conservation grant, as the state Department of Environmental Conservation announced.

Nestled within the 6,000-acre Manorville Hills County Park, this property becomes a valuable addition to the publicly accessible areas within the Long Island Central Pine Barrens, promoting outdoor activities and enhancing the overall recreational landscape.

The Long Island Cental Pine Barrens Society lends its support to Brookhaven's purchase, recognizing it as a crucial step toward expanding open spaces and adding approximately 4,000 acres to the existing 106,000-acre pine barrens.

Councilman Dan Panico and Pine Barrens Society officials emphasize the property's diverse ecosystem, underlining its role in preserving the area's natural balance. The undeveloped land is expected to safeguard about 18.8 million gallons of drinking water annually.

This acquisition seamlessly aligns with Brookhaven's broader conservation strategy, contributing to protecting natural resources. Notably, the property falls within the core preservation area, covering 57,817 acres, where development is strictly prohibited. The remaining 48,665 acres, designated as compatible growth areas, allow limited development under stringent rules.

A key aspect of this conservation effort is the Pine Barrens Protection Act, a landmark legislation enacted in 1993 by New York. The act aims to safeguard the unique and delicate ecosystems within the pine barrens by restricting or banning development activities. This legal framework ensures the preservation of critical habitats, preventing ecological degradation and maintaining the region's ecological balance.

The $300,000 state grant for the Manorville purchase is part of broader efforts to support land acquisitions. DEC announced four grants totaling $1,035,340, with three additional grants allocated for land purchases in upstate regions. Brookhaven's proactive approach to environmental stewardship marks a significant development, enhancing the local community's connection with nature and fostering the myriad benefits of expanded green spaces.
