Comfort and Care: Brookhaven's Annual Pajama Drive Targets New Heights in Giving

With the holiday season approaching, the Town of Brookhaven is preparing for its beloved annual pajama drive, which embodies the spirit of community and giving. Town Clerk Kevin LaValle and EJ's PJs founder Patricia Poggi are at the helm of this year's drive, which aims to deliver warmth and comfort to children facing hardship by providing new pajamas.

LaValle captured the essence of the initiative: "As the cold sets in, we're reminded of the simple comforts many of us take for granted. This pajama drive is our way of ensuring that children in need can also enjoy the warmth that a new pair of pajamas brings during the winter."

The drive was born from the Poggi family's tradition, which Patricia Poggi transformed into a community-wide mission. "Our family's joy in wearing 'Poggi Plaid Pajamas' each Christmas sparked the desire to pass on that same feeling of comfort to others," shared Poggi. The initiative began with a small family effort and expanded into a large-scale donation drive, thanks to the support of the local community and the Town of Brookhaven.

Reflecting on the growth, Poggi said, "Seeing our community rally to support this cause year after year truly warms the heart. It's a reflection of the caring spirit that thrives in Brookhaven."

The previous year's event included a festive gathering, the Breakfast & Pictures with Santa Pajama Party, which significantly exceeded the drive's goal. "Witnessing the community's enthusiasm and generosity at last year's event was incredibly moving," recounted Pastor Hank Kistler of Connect Church.

The pajama drive also complements the Town of Brookhaven's Annual Youth Interface Program Toy Drive, further extending its reach. Poggi notes, "It's a privilege to collaborate on these events, which allows us to make a greater impact each holiday season."

As the drive approaches, LaValle and Poggi are hopeful for a record-breaking year, continuing the tradition of community giving. Each donation signifies more than just a pair of pajamas; it represents a gesture of warmth and care for the youth in the community.

The pajama drive is set for December 6, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, at Connect Church, 31 Horseblock Road in Centereach.
