Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) and Stony Brook Southampton Hospital (SBSH) have both been awarded an 'A' Hospital Safety Grade for Fall 2024 by The Leapfrog Group. This organization is a national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety, assigning grades based on more than 30 performance measures related to errors, accidents, injuries, and infections.

“These ‘A’ grades from The Leapfrog Group validate our commitment to delivering the highest standard of safe, quality care,” stated William A. Wertheim, MD, executive vice president for Stony Brook Medicine. He emphasized that the recognition reflects the dedication of the healthcare team in providing exceptional care.

Carol Gomes, CEO of Stony Brook University Hospital, noted that this top mark showcases the staff's dedication to patient safety. “Earning an ‘A’ grade means exceptional, safety-focused healthcare is right here when patients in our community need it," she said.

For SBSH, this marks the second consecutive year receiving an 'A' grade. It is one of only 17 hospitals in New York State to achieve such consistency in Spring and Fall 2024.

Emily Mastaler, chief administrative officer at SBSH, expressed pride in earning the distinction again. She attributed it to the tireless efforts of their team members who prioritize patient safety around the clock.

Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, recognized the accomplishment as significant for both hospitals. “It reflects enormous dedication to your patients and their families," she remarked.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is unique in focusing solely on preventable medical errors and related issues that cause over 500 deaths daily in the U.S. It offers a peer-reviewed and transparent rating system updated biannually.
