Stony Brook professors earn global recognition as highly cited researchers

Seven professors from Stony Brook University have been named on the 2024 Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list, which identifies them as among the top 1 percent of researchers globally. The honored faculty includes Christopher Gobler, Dima Kozakov, James Lattimer, Haibin Ling, Ping Liu, Roman Kotov, and Paolo Boffetta.

Provost Carl Lejuez expressed pride in the diversity of academic disciplines represented by these researchers. "I’m so pleased to see such a diverse range of academic disciplines represented on the Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list, and I congratulate each of our seven faculty members for their work and this accomplishment," he stated.

Clarivate's President of Academia and Government, Bar Veinstein, emphasized the broader impact of these researchers: “We celebrate these Highly Cited Researchers whose exceptional and community-wide influence shapes the future of science, technology and academia globally.”

Paolo Boffetta was recognized for his cross-field research into environmental factors related to cancer. Christopher Gobler received acknowledgment in Plant and Animal Science for his work on climate change and marine ecosystems. Roman Kotov was honored in Psychiatry and Psychology for advancements in mental health classification.

Dima Kozakov earned recognition in Biology and Biochemistry due to his contributions to macromolecular modeling. James Lattimer's work in nuclear astrophysics earned him a place in Cross-Field research. Haibin Ling was acknowledged in Engineering for his efforts in computer vision and AI. Ping Liu was noted for her cross-field research on materials for energy production.

David Pendlebury from Clarivate commented on the evaluation process: “As the need for high-quality data from rigorously selected sources becomes ever more critical, we continue to refine our evaluation and selection policies to address the challenges of an increasingly complex and polluted scholarly record.”

The program identifies researchers who have authored multiple highly cited papers within their fields over the past decade. The final list is determined through qualitative analysis combined with expert judgment.
