The William Floyd Colonials boys' varsity basketball team recently paid tribute to their late assistant coach, Darrell Sumpter, with a victory against Longwood. The game marked the team's first since Coach Sumpter's unexpected passing. The Colonials secured a 66-57 win in honor of "Coach D."

The gymnasium was filled with members of the William Floyd school community and supporters who came to honor Coach Sumpter's memory. The Sumpter family was present, sitting behind the William Floyd bench, showing their continued support for the program that meant so much to them and to Coach Sumpter. Before the game began, announcer Michael Feldstein read Coach D's biography over the public address system, followed by a moment of silence.

During the match against League I rival Longwood, both teams exchanged leads. The Colonials took control with a significant run in the second half, reaching their largest lead at 54-40. Despite Longwood's comeback efforts narrowing the score to 58-55, crucial plays by Jawuan Smith and Adam Gulsen sealed the victory for William Floyd.

Jermaine King led the team with a standout performance, scoring 33 points and setting a school record with eight three-pointers. Jawuan Smith contributed significantly with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Dahmarion Moses added defensive strength with eight rebounds and three blocks.

This victory was part of a season dedicated to honoring Coach Sumpter's legacy as they aim to maintain their status as one of Suffolk County's top programs.

Funeral services for Darrell Sumpter will be held at Robertaccio Funeral Home in Center Moriches on December 20 and 21. A private crematory service will follow without burial.
