William Floyd wrestling team excels early in season

The William Floyd boys' varsity wrestling team, under the guidance of head coach Tony Mecca, has started their 2024-25 season on a strong note. The Colonials have participated in several tournaments and League I matchups during the first month of competition.

Their tournament schedule kicked off with the 17th Annual Takedown Autism Tournament held at William Floyd High School. The Colonials emerged victorious, achieving a 4-0 record by defeating Glen Cove, Smithtown West, Bay Shore, and Islip. Notably, Jack Meyer and Josiah Lors remained undefeated individually. Six other team members—David Barrera, David Gonzalez, Caleb Holmes, Jayvyn Johnson, Patrick Lospinuso, and Jonathan Reyes—achieved 3-1 records in the tournament. This event raised $1,500 for Rise Life Services to support individuals with intellectual disabilities and mental health challenges.

In the Commack Classic Tournament, the Colonials secured second place overall behind Commack. Jack Meyer (131 lbs.) and Josiah Lors (215 lbs.) continued their winning streaks by claiming first place in their brackets. Antonio Martin (160 lbs.) earned second place in his bracket while Caleb Holmes (124 lbs.), Achilles Jordan (138 lbs.), and Aaron Land (170 lbs.) finished third in theirs. Other wrestlers who placed include Jayden Glover (108 lbs.), Jayvyn Johnson (138 lbs.), Jordan Glover (108 lbs.), Brandon Caceres (190 lbs.), Kenny Ochoa (190 lbs.), and Javier Soledad (215 lbs.).

At the Joe Davidson Memorial Tournament at Sachem North High School, Jack Meyer celebrated his 100th career win as both he and Josiah Lors won individual championships for the third consecutive time. David Barrera took third place in his bracket with Caleb Holmes, David Gonzalez, Jayvyn Johnson, and Aaron Land also placing.

The team's success extends to a 3-2 League I record this season. They secured victories against Walt Whitman with a score of 38-23 at home; Brentwood with a final score of 34-28 on the road; and Central Islip by a score of 44-25 on the road as well. The team is preparing for upcoming league matches and championship tournaments.

The Colonials are set to face Riverhead on January 8 for their final League I regular-season match before participating in two more tournaments: the 39th Annual Kujan Brothers’ Memorial Tournament on January 18 and the Deer Park Duals on January 25.
