Stony Brook University celebrates Black History Month focusing on African Americans' labor contributions

Wendy Pearson Vice President for Strategic Initiatives | Stony Brook University

Stony Brook University (SBU) is set to commemorate Black History Month in February with a series of events, performances, and discussions that celebrate the culture and history of the Pan-African community. This year's theme, "African Americans and Labor," focuses on how work has influenced the experiences of Black people throughout history.

"Black History Month is an opportunity to create spaces that foster a sense of belonging for those within the Pan-African diaspora," stated Donna-Lee Mahabeer, director of Diversity, Intercultural and Community Engagement (DICE) and co-chair of the Black History Month Committee. "It’s also a chance for others to deepen their appreciation for the culture and engage with the many facets of the diaspora."

The celebration is organized by DICE, the Department of Africana Studies, and the Black History Month Committee. It will include educational and cultural activities aimed at honoring African American and Black heritage while raising awareness about ongoing struggles for equality, inclusion, and social justice.

The events will kick off on February 5 with "theBlack History Month Student Union Takeover: A Celebration of Culture and Unity!" Hosted by DICE, this event will feature performances by student organizations, opportunities to connect with Black student groups, as well as prizes and giveaways. Refreshments will be sponsored by UNITI Cultural Center and New Student and Transition Programs.

For detailed information on these events, individuals are encouraged to visit the Black History Month dashboard on SB Engaged.
