Stony Brook therapists highlight benefits of personalized music and art therapy

Lorraine Rubino Executive Assistant to the Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and Assistant Vice President for Presidential Initiatives | Stony Brook University

Kara Gerstein and Angela Reis have joined Stony Brook Medicine's Functional Therapeutic Activities department, where they apply their expertise in music and art therapy at Stony Brook University Hospital’s psychiatric ward. Their work focuses on the healing power of the arts, which they experience daily.

Gerstein and Reis emphasize the importance of personalizing therapy to meet each patient's unique needs and goals. "When they come into the room, they might see things that inspire them, that open the door for them to try new things. And then we build off of that," said Angela Reis.

Their roles allow them to witness firsthand how therapeutic settings can positively impact patients' health, happiness, and overall well-being.
